7 Signs Your Consumer Unit Needs Upgrading — West Midlands Electrician Advice

Your consumer unit (fuse box) is the heart of your home's electrical system. An outdated or faulty board can be a serious safety hazard. Here are 7 warning signs that it's time for an upgrade, from our West Midlands electricians.

The 7 Warning Signs

01

Your Fuse Box Has Old-Style Rewirable Fuses

If your consumer unit contains old ceramic or rewirable fuses rather than modern circuit breakers, it's a clear sign it needs replacing. Old fuse wire doesn't provide the same level of protection as modern MCBs (miniature circuit breakers) and RCDs.

02

Circuits Trip Frequently

Occasional tripping is normal, but if your circuits trip regularly — especially under normal load — this could indicate an overloaded board, faulty wiring, or a consumer unit that's no longer adequate for your home's electrical demand.

03

No RCD Protection

Modern consumer units must include RCD (Residual Current Device) protection. RCDs can save your life by cutting power within milliseconds if a fault is detected. If your board doesn't have RCDs, it's time for an upgrade.

04

Burning Smell or Scorch Marks

Any burning smell, discolouration, or scorch marks around your consumer unit is a serious warning sign. This could indicate overheating, arcing, or a fault that poses an immediate fire risk. Call an electrician immediately.

05

Your Board Is Over 25 Years Old

Consumer units have a lifespan of around 25 years. An older board may not meet current BS 7671 wiring regulations and may not have the capacity to handle modern electrical loads like EV chargers, heat pumps, or smart home systems.

06

You're Planning a Major Electrical Upgrade

Installing an EV charger, electric shower, or additional circuits often requires a consumer unit upgrade to ensure there's sufficient capacity and protection. It's often more cost-effective to upgrade the board at the same time.

07

Your EICR Has Flagged Issues

If a recent Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) has returned a C1 or C2 code relating to your consumer unit, remedial action is required. A new consumer unit will resolve most board-related issues in one go.

What Does a Consumer Unit Upgrade Involve?

A consumer unit upgrade typically takes 4–6 hours for an average home. Our NICEIC-approved electricians will:

  1. 1
    Isolate the electricity supply safely
  2. 2
Remove the old consumer unit and inspect all incoming cables
  3. 3
Install a new dual RCD or RCBO consumer unit to current BS 7671 standards
  4. 4
Connect all existing circuits with correct labelling
  5. 5
Install surge protection device (SPD) if required
  6. 6
Test all circuits and issue an Electrical Installation Certificate
